You will use in vivo two-photon calcium imaging in mice, alongside behavioural assays and computational modelling, to track how learning-driven changes emerge in these early circuits and how this shapes perception.

You will join a collaborative lab within a thriving neuroscience community at Leeds, home to over 44 research labs across multiple faculties, with access to cutting-edge imaging facilities.

The University of Leeds and the Faculty of Biological Sciences are committed to providing equal opportunities for all and offer a range of family friendly policies. The University is a charter member of Athena SWAN (the national body that promotes gender equality in higher education), and the Faculty of Biological Sciences was awarded a Silver award in 2020. We are proud to be an inclusive Faculty that values all staff, and are happy to consider job share applications and requests for flexible working arrangements from our employees. Do you have an established background in microbiology, gut microbiome or microbial ecology and functional foods? Are you interested to explore the innovation potential of a scientific discovery to bring the research to marketplace by working with food industry stakeholders? Do you want to further your career in one of the UK’s leading research-intensive universities?

We are looking for a Research and Innovation Fellow to join a project funded by the National Alternative Protein Innovation Centre (NAPIC). NAPIC is a £38m entity (including a £15m UKRI investment) to lead the UK’s alternative protein knowledge and Innovation ecosystem. NAPIC’s vision is to make alternative proteins mainstream for a sustainable planet. The centre is led by the Universities of Leeds, Sheffield, Imperial College London and the James Hutton Institute, in collaboration with over 100 national and international partners. NAPIC is a cohesive pan-UK centre poised to revolutionise the UK’s agri-food sector by harnessing our world-leading science base through a co-created alternative protein strategy across the Discovery → Innovation → Commercialisation pipeline to support the transition to a sustainable, high growth, blended protein bioeconomy. NAPIC features four integrated activity streams: research to address innovation challenges; a national alternative protein knowledge base; workforce of the future; and accessible Innovation facilities.

This particular project will use a combination of in vitro models of the human colonic microbiota, small-scale human dietary interventions, analytical chemistry and both culture-based and culture-independent measurement of the gut microbiome to assess the impact of new and alternative proteins on gut health. Specifically, this project will measure the ability of new/alternative proteins to modify the composition of the gut microbiota, influence microbial production of beneficial metabolites (e.g. short chain fatty acids, amino acids and derivatives, bile acids, small phenolic acids) and improve markers human gut health (e.g. intestinal permeability and inflammation).

This position will generate new data on the gut health properties of new and alternative proteins and in collaboration with other NAPIC researchers, generate an multi-functional database of new and alternative protein functional properties, which using AI/ML will then be used to develop predictive relationships between the fundamental properties of the individual proteins: amino acid sequence (e.g., from the Protein Data Bank); extent of digestion, production of beneficial metabolites, modulation of the gut microbiota and regulation of human gut health markers. The overall aim is to develop a model testing system to establish the ability of new and alternative proteins to support human gut health, and enable population based transition to a low animal protein diet by delivering nutritious, health promoting alternative protein foods.

You will join a highly dynamic, interdisciplinary team focusing on the whole theme of alternative proteins, collaborating with a wide range of academics and industrial partners, helping to run workshops and outreach activities as well as conducting your own research program.

You will have a PhD or near completion in Microbiology, Microbial Ecology, Biochemistry, or Biological Sciences or a closely related discipline together with a strong background in gut microbiome and functional foods. You will also have a positive attitude to collaborative research and the drive to make a significant contribution to making this ground-breaking project a success.

Please note that this post may be suitable for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker visa route but first-time applicants might need to qualify for salary concessions.
Are you a fully qualified, ambitious and experienced registered (allied) healthcare professional committed to the progression of clinical research and a career in academia? Would you like the opportunity to undertake a PhD? Do you want to receive research training whilst conducting a clinical research project in one of the UK’s leading research-intensive Universities?

The University of Leeds is one of the top 75 universities in the world. We have a truly global community, with more than 39,000 students from 170 different countries and over 9,000 staff of 100 different nationalities. Established in 1904, we have a strong tradition of academic excellence, reflected in first-class student education, along with world-leading research that has a real impact around the globe. This role is generously funded through a grant provided by the Institut la Conference Hippocrate (AICH).

You will support and undertake research focused on quality of life of patients with IDH-mutant glioma and their family carers. IDH-mutant gliomas are primary malignant brain tumours with a relatively favourable prognosis. Clinical insights into the best treatment protocols are fast advancing with new treatment modalities becoming available. These aim to provide good disease control while limiting the odds of late treatment effects which can impact on patients’ quality of life outcomes and cognitive functioning. Most research studies to date have included heterogeneous glioma patient groups (not just those with IDH-mutant glioma) and assessed outcomes only cross-sectionally. It is therefore important that we know more on how to support people diagnosed with IDH-mutant glioma as well as their family carers, in the short- and longer term.

Together with the successful candidate we will identify clinically useful questions to answer through the PhD research. You will lead your own studies in this area, including methods development, and contribute to the work of the research group as a whole.

During your employment you will also work towards a PhD at the University of Leeds. You'll receive support from your supervisory team, which will be tailored to your background and the focus area of your research. This is an exciting opportunity if you are a nurse, allied health professional, or psychologist, especially if you are aiming to pursue an academic career. You will be a registered healthcare professional with HCPC/NMC/AHCS registration or equivalent (please note: dentists and pharmacists are not eligible for this post).

This Clinical Research Fellow role is a paid position, available for those in NHS Band 6 roles or equivalent

PhD tuition fees are fully funded at the UK (Home) rate. Candidates who are liable for tuition fees above the UK (Home) rate will be responsible for meeting the difference between the UK (Home) and overseas tuition fee rates, unless alternative funding is secured. A budget for consumables and training is available.

What we offer in return

26 days holiday plus approx.16 Bank Holidays/days that the University is closed by custom (including Christmas) – That’s 42 days a year!

Generous pension scheme plus life assurance– the University contributes 14.5% of salary

Health and Wellbeing: Discounted staff membership options at The Edge, our state-of-the-art Campus gym, with a pool, sauna, climbing wall, cycle circuit, and sports halls.

Personal Development: Access to courses run by our Organisational Development & Professional Learning team.

Access to on-site childcare, shopping discounts and travel schemes are also available.

And much more!

If you are looking for a role that will help improve care and support for patients diagnosed with a brain tumour, and their families, whilst obtaining your PhD, apply today.

To explore the post further or for any queries you may have, please contact:

Dr Florien Boele, Associate Professor of Medical Psychology

Email: f.boele@leeds.ac.uk
