Lecturer in Railway Economics

Do you have a background in economics and have an interest in applying your skills to applications in the railway sector?

We are looking for a highly motivated and talented individual who can deliver excellent research and teaching in the field of railway economics and management. 

The successful applicant will contribute to the development and delivery of specialist modules in the area of railway operations, management and policy, as part of the new Railway Operation, Management and Policy Masters education programme in the University, to commence in September 2019. 

The candidate will be able to demonstrate an excellent academic potential and an established track record of high-quality and innovative research activity around economics and/or econometrics– with applications to the transport sector. The post holder will be a member of academic staff in the Institute for Transport Studies, which has significant strengths in transport economics and modelling, with particular pedigree in rail economics. The post holder will also contribute to the growing activity of the newly-established cross-University Institute of High Speed Rail and System Integration.

Policy impact is at the core of our analysis and our rail research has been used extensively by policy and industry bodies including Office of Rail and Road and the European Commission. More widely, we have also played a central role in developing the UK Department for Transport's Web TAG appraisal guidelines, and have authored appraisal methods for the UK authorities, the EU and World Bank

You will be highly motivated, enthusiastic, and have strong analytical and statistical skills, with particular background and experience in economics covering broad elements of demand and/or supply analysis, such as: understanding and forecasting the behaviour of consumers, firms and markets; pricing and revenue forecasting; and modelling costs and efficiency. Our research bridges the gap between academe and practice – and we seek to deliver excellent research with high impact.
