Head of the School of Molecular and Cellular Biology

Do you have the ability to provide the strategic vision and leadership necessary to lead the School to successfully develop and deliver the School’s plans through inspiring, motivating and developing staff to achieve their full potential?

Are you passionate about delivering world-leading research and an exceptional student experience in an international and interdisciplinary context?

The University of Leeds is renowned globally for the quality of its teaching and research. It ranks in the top 100 universities in the world, and in the top 10 in the UK according to the Guardian University Guide 2019. The University’s core mission is to create knowledge and opportunity through sector-leading student education and globally-recognised research. The University’s success in supporting their students to become independent, critical thinkers through an unfailing dedication to research-based education is exemplified by their highest-ever rankings in a number of national surveys and assessments.

The University is now seeking a new Head to lead the School of Molecular and Cellular Biology, which is home to approximately 50 academics. The School has an extremely strong reputation for meaningful and positive impact through its research, having come 6th for research impact in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework. Its commitment to student achievement places it highly in terms of overall satisfaction, and it continues to invest in teaching infrastructure with two new bespoke teaching laboratories worth £5.5m.

The next Head of School will have the clarity of vision to shape the School’s research priorities around its exceptional strengths, ensure the School is offering a modern, forward-looking curriculum, and maximise the strategic opportunities arising from the changing higher education landscape. S/he will have the requisite academic credibility to lead with authority, and will thrive on working collaboratively in a dynamic environment to enhance the reputation of the School with a focus on quality and excellence. S/he will be committed to upholding the School’s dedication to equality and diversity.

The appointed candidate will be an active member of the University’s Leadership Forum and of the Executive Committee of the Faculty of Biological Sciences, promoting a coordinated approach to delivering innovative strategic academic development. The appointee will be taking on a significant and complex leadership role in the Faculty, and must be able to lead with a clear vision, collegially engaging others across the School, Faculty and University.
