This role will be based on the university campus, with scope for it to be undertaken in a hybrid manner. We are also open to discussing flexible working arrangements.

The University is undertaking a significant portfolio of strategic transformation across academic and professional service domains. Within this portfolio, the Curriculum Redefined (CR) strategic change programme is entering the Enhancement and Integration Phase, which represents a critical transition from large transformation programme to sustainable business-as-usual delivery. This Business Architect role is being recruited on a 12-month fixed term basis (with the potential for extension, subject to funding) and will be dedicated to the team delivering the CR programme. The role will be focused on embedding outcomes from the previous phase of the programme and integrating them with other major change programmes, whilst establishing durable operating models.

The Business Architect role in general provides University-wide business architecture leadership within the Transformation Office, strengthening institutional coherence across functional boundaries and ensuring alignment between strategy and execution. It also provides enterprise business design assurance for major investments and transformation initiatives, informing governance and portfolio decision-making, mitigating structural risk, and safeguarding the integrity of the University’s operating model as change is delivered.

Day to day, the role ensures that major investments and transformation initiatives align with the University’s agreed operating model and institutional priorities. It mitigates institutional risk by preventing duplication and fragmentation, assessing the structural implications of change, and safeguarding coherence across the change and investment portfolio.

Working across Faculties, Professional Services, and change teams, the role applies structured architectural thinking to inform executive decision-making and support the translation of strategic intent into coordinated institutional change.

This specific Business Architect role will do this in the context of the CR programme as it addresses complex organisational design challenges, including: the design and implementation of a single institutional “front door” for Educational Enhancement; the realignment of roles and reporting lines; the integration of previously federated services; and the establishment of new governance arrangements, service level agreements, and performance metrics.

The role will provide critical capacity to manage the dependencies of this work with other major transformation programmes, align delivery roadmaps, and ensure CR programme outcomes are designed for adoption within emerging institutional structures, rather than becoming isolated or redundant.

What we offer in return

26 days holiday plus approx.16 Bank Holidays/days that the University is closed by custom (including Christmas) – That’s 42 days a year!

Generous pension scheme plus life assurance.

Health and Wellbeing: Discounted staff membership options at The Edge, our state-of-the-art Campus gym, with a pool, sauna, climbing wall, cycle circuit, and sports halls.

Personal Development: Access to courses run by our Organisational Development & Professional Learning team.

Access to on-site childcare, shopping discounts and travel schemes are also available.

And much more!

To explore the post further or for any queries you may have, please contact:

Neil Smith, Deputy Director Transformation Office

Email: n.s.smith@leeds.ac.uk

We are also open to discussing flexible working arrangements.

Overview of the Role

We seek to appoint a research fellow in Modelling of Marine Atmospheric Composition within the Institute for Climate and Atmospheric Science at the University of Leeds. The successful candidate will lead global atmospheric chemistry and Earth system modelling analysis to knowledge of global-scale impacts of natural volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions from the oceans. The work is funded under the UKRI COCO-VOC (Closing the budget in marine atmospheric Oxidative Capacity through the quantification of Oceanic VOC emissions) Large Grant project, involving 5 UK organisations, and a number of overseas partners. The project aims to quantify the impacts of reactive carbon emissions from the global oceans on the climate system, through improving understanding of VOC and OH cycling in the background atmosphere, and constraining the sensitivities of VOCs, aerosol, and the global atmospheric oxidative capacity to changes in anthropogenic and natural emissions. You will collaborate extensively with UK and international partners from across the project.

In this role, you will develop and implement new model schemes, and design, run and analyse Earth system model simulations to quantify the role of sea-air exchange of reactive VOCs in modifying atmospheric oxidation chemistry and aerosol. You will quantify impacts of these VOC emissions on oxidative capacity, methane lifetime, and cloud condensation nuclei abundances, to estimate their role in the global climate system, and implications for anthropogenic radiative forcing. You will collaborate closely with partners from across the COCO-VOC project, using field measurements to constrain a sea-air transfer parameterisation, and to evaluate the Earth system model. You will have the opportunity to work with a wide range of research groups, and to take a leading and active role in national and international project meetings.

You will have a PhD in atmospheric science or climate science, expertise in atmospheric chemistry, and experience of running and analysing numerical models on high performance computing platforms. You will have a proven ability to tackle complex science problems using a combination of models and observations, and an enthusiasm to work closely with national and international collaborators across the varied disciplines of field measurements, laboratory measurements, and modelling.

Please note that this post may be suitable for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker visa route but first-time applicants might need to qualify for salary concessions.
Do you have a strong technical background in Corrosion, Machine Learning and Numerical Modelling? Are you interested in working with industry to develop Machine Learning methodologies and protocols needed to support the uptake of renewable bio-feedstocks as alternatives to petroleum-based feedstocks in the production of fuel?

There are strong economic, environmental, regulatory and geopolitical drivers to replace petroleum-based feedstocks with renewable, bio-based feedstocks in the production of fuel. However, bio-feedstocks have significantly different chemistries than crude oil that may accelerate the corrosion of refinery infrastructure, requiring the development of new knowledge, experimental and theoretical methods to corrosion management. Sponsored by bp and working with an internationally leading team from Imperial College, London (ICL), University College, London (UCL) and the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), this project aims to create the fundamental understanding and reliable corrosion prediction tools needed to accelerate the uptake of bio-feedstocks.

This project, based at the University of Leeds, will focus on the development of a range of Machine Learning, AI and optimisation tools and methodologies for bio-feedstock corrosion management, that can accommodate new chemistries and material combinations and predict material performance (corrosion rates, lifespan, operating limits) in refinery operations. This will require frequent interactions with bp and with experimentalists at UIUC, to develop adaptive experimental sampling methods, and with colleagues at ICL and UCL, to implement Physics-informed Machine Learning methods within an overall system modelling software tool.

We are open to discussing flexible working arrangements.

To explore the post further or for any queries you may have, please contact:

Prof Richard Barker, Professor in Corrosion Science and Engineering

Tel: +44 (0)113 343 2206

Email: R.J.Barker@leeds.ac.uk

Please note that this post may be suitable for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker visa route but first-time applicants might need to qualify for salary concessions.
Grade 7 (£41,064 – £48,822 p.a. depending on experience).

We are open to discussing flexible working arrangements.

Are you an ambitious researcher software engineer looking for your next challenge? Do you have an established background in developing software solutions? Do you want to play a leading role in developing an AI platform to valorise agri-food waste-streams and improve protein security?

We are looking for a Research Software Engineer to join our international and interdisciplinary team developing an open-source AI platform for protein production from agri-food waste-streams. We have recently been awarded £2M from the Bezos Earth Fund as part of their AI for Nature and Climate Grand Challenge to develop this platform.

Nearly 29% of the world’s population faces food insecurity, yet millions of tonnes of nutrient-rich agri-food waste is generated globally each day. This waste can be upcycled into sustainable, high-quality microbial protein (e.g. yeast, fungi, bacteria and algae) via fermentation for use as ingredients in existing foods or to produce novel meat and dairy alternatives. However, microbial fermentation processes are difficult to design, optimise and scale up, especially for complex, and highly variable waste streams. This limits their investment attractiveness and economic viability, especially for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and ultimately their global adoption.

The University of Leeds in collaboration with the Commonwealth Science and Innovation Research Organisation (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, Australian Government - CSIRO) in Australia will develop the world’s first open-access AI platform to address these challenges by streamlining the development of microbial protein production processes. Leveraging advances in modern AI, the platform will consist of a Waste to Protein AI Engine coupled with an adaptive user interface enabling users to input their waste composition, volume, and location and immediately receive actionable insights, such as optimised fermentation parameters, microbial strain recommendations, projected protein yields and economic returns. Our AI platform will also provide users with an R&D roadmap that recommends critical trials to perform during process development and scale-up to reduce experimentation needs and provide partnership recommendations for areas where they lack expertise, facilities or market access.

You will be based in the Food AI Lab (www.foodailab.co.uk) in the School of Food Science and Nutrition and benefit from engaging with the growing AI, Alternative Protein and Food activities at the University of Leeds including the National Alternative Protein Innovation Centre (National Alternative Protein Innovation Centre (NAPIC) - NAPIC) the Leeds Institute for Data Analytics Food Community (LIDA: Food | Leeds Institute for Data Analytics) and the Global Food and Environmental Institute (Global Food and Environment Institute | University of Leeds). You will also benefit from collaborating with CSIRO and numerous industry partners in the UK and across the globe.

You will have a PhD or near completion (i.e., initial thesis to be submitted before the start date) in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline with a component of software development and system architecture, and experience in Cloud Infrastructure and Deployment. You will have proficiency in API development and component integration and strong programming skills in languages relevant to data science and web development (e.g., Python, JavaScript).

You will also have excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical software concepts to non-technical stakeholders (e.g., food producers and policymakers) with a proven ability to work closely with a small group of researchers and collaborate within a wider, multidisciplinary and international team.

Please note that this post may be suitable for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker visa route, but first-time applicants might need to qualify for salary concessions. We recently made the exciting discovery of a role for the kinase PKR and the transcription factor IRF1 in inducing expression of proteins that block assembly of hepatitis C virus (DOI: 10.1371/journal.ppat.1010812), uncovering a hitherto unrecognised aspect of innate antiviral immunity. Subsequent transcriptomic analysis has identified a panel of candidate genes regulated by PKR/IRF1, and we are now poised to investigate their potential role in blocking assembly of infectious virus particles. This position will focus on characterising these novel antiviral effectors, initially using hepatitis C virus as a model system, but also evaluating effects on other pathogenic viruses such as Chikungunya virus and SARS-CoV-2. The position provides an opportunity to conduct ground-breaking research into the host response to virus infection and would suit an individual with experience in working with pathogenic viruses in high containment, with appropriate cell biological and/or biochemical skills pertinent to the study of protein function. The successful applicant will join a large, interdisciplinary laboratory shared between multiple investigators and working on a range of viruses.

You should have a PhD (or be close to completion) in molecular virology or a closely allied discipline, with experience in propagation and analysis of pathogenic viruses in a Biological Safety Level 3 (BSL3) laboratory.

The University of Leeds and the Faculty of Biological Sciences are committed to providing equal opportunities for all and offer a range of family friendly policies.
