Do you have a strong technical background in Machine Learning and Numerical Modelling? Are you interested in working with industry to develop Machine Learning methodologies and protocols needed to deliver resilient, interoperable and safe CO2 transport infrastructure in Europe?

Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) is a key element in the European strategy for carbon neutrality by 2050. The University of Leeds is part of a large consortium of 24 partners from 7 European countries, consisting of leading international universities, research organisations and leading international energy companies, including bp, EDF, Equinor and Shell, working to ensure a sustainable CCUS industry at scale. The overall goal is to ensure that the transport infrastructure is capable of handling CO2 streams at different flow rates, pressures and states and with different compositions and impurities without posing unacceptable risks for the infrastructure, the environment and populations.

The aim of this project is to develop numerical models and Machine Learning and AI methodologies, including Physics Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) and Symbolic Regression tools, to predict chemical reactions, impurity evolution along pipelines and associated corrosion threats in dense phase CO2 streams with impurities. Working with regulators, standardisation and certification bodies, technology developers and industry, the models will be used to determine optimal pipeline operating conditions and develop guidelines for pipeline operation, providing practical recommendations for impurity concentrations ensuring safe and efficient transport of dense phase CO2.

We are open to discussing flexible working arrangements.

To explore the post further or for any queries you may have, please contact:

Prof Richard Barker, Professor in Corrosion Science and Engineering

Tel: +44 (0)113 343 2206

Email: R.J.Barker@leeds.ac.uk

Please note that this post may be suitable for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker visa route but first-time applicants might need to qualify for salary concessions. Are you committed to meeting goals with high-quality outcomes?

Cultural Collections & Galleries has recently been awarded funding from The National Archives, through the Archives Revealed programme, to catalogue the Irene Manton Archive.

Irene Manton (1904–1988) was a pioneering botanist whose research on ferns and algae helped advance 20thcentury biological study through her use of ultraviolet and electron microscopy. A long serving Professor of Botany at the University of Leeds, she made significant contributions to mid-20th century developments in the field. Her archive offers valuable insight into her scientific work, the international networks she participated in, and the experiences of a woman working in a male dominated area of science. It also reflects the unique connections she drew between art and scientific practice. This project will make her archive fully discoverable, supporting new research into women’s roles in academic science and the visual culture of botanical study.

Cultural Collections & Galleries at the University of Leeds holds world-class collections encompassing archives, manuscripts, rare books, and the University’s institutional archive and art collection. Access is delivered through our research centre in the Brotherton Library, our two public galleries, and increasingly through rich online content. Resource discovery and the management of collections data are major challenges for the service and are a focus of efforts to effectively showcase our distinctive offer to the University and wider research community.

As Project Archivist your main responsibility will be to ensure the collection is catalogued to exceptionally high standards. You will develop an appraisal and cataloguing approach for processing electron microscope images. In addition, you will create index terms and authority records, to ensure discoverability of the collection online. You will assist with the physical management of the collection and work with colleagues in our Digitisation Team to make available a selection of high quality digital images from the archive. You will also support the work of the Project Collections Assistant and Team Assistant. You will promote the Archive at research events, through blog posts and help develop an end of project exhibition and launch event to showcase the collection highlights.

Please note that due to Home Office visa requirements, this role may only be suitable for first-time Skilled Worker visa applicants if they are eligible for salary concessions.
Do you have a strong interest in fermentation? Do you have experience in process design and life cycle assessments? Are you keen to develop your career in bioeconomies? Do you want to further your career in one of the UK’s leading research-intensive Universities?

Achieving economically viable, sustainable and net‑zero production routes for biogenically derived chemicals remains one of the fundamental challenges facing the global bioeconomy. Converting bio‑waste streams, including food, paper, and agricultural residues into high-value products, offers a transformative opportunity: these waste materials are low-cost, widely available, and currently underutilised. Recent advances have demonstrated that such wastes can be efficiently processed to yield high concentrations of fermentable sugars, unlocking new pathways for producing bioplastics, platform chemicals, and next-generation bio-manufactured materials.

This project will create the first integrated digital twin of an intensified bio–waste–to–sugars conversion process, enabling industry and policymakers to understand how the process system performs technically, economically and environmentally at scale. As the Research Fellow, you will develop process models which will support the wider optimisation frameworks and system-level sustainability assessments to:

Map and evaluate material, energy and resource supply chains.

Integrate novel manufacturing and separation technologies into an intensified process flowsheet.

Design multi-criteria decision‑support tools capturing cost, carbon, land‑use, circularity and resilience metrics.

Quantify and manage uncertainties in supply, quality, and logistics of bio‑waste feedstocks.

Identify the most economically competitive and environmentally robust deployment scenarios for UK and international markets.

The outcomes of this work will directly support the scale-up of circular, bio-based manufacturing technologies, offering evidence-backed strategies for cost reduction, process intensification, and sustainable market entry.

This project is part of a UKRI‑BBSRC-funded programme based at the University of Leeds, working closely with collaborators at the Universities of Manchester and Warwick. The project sits within the Global Challenge Centre for Innovative Recycling and Circular Economy (CIRCLE), engaging an international consortium of academic and industrial partners across the USA, Canada, Korea and Australia (www.jcvi.org/research/circle). The successful applicant will join a growing community working at the interface of biotechnology, process systems engineering, circular economy innovation, and global sustainability.

We are open to discussing flexible working arrangements.

To explore the post further or for any queries you may have, please contact:

Professor John Blacker, Professor

Email: J.Blacker@leeds.ac.uk

Please note that this post may be suitable for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker visa route but first-time applicants might need to qualify for salary concessions. We are also open to discussing flexible working arrangements.

Are you passionate about bridging the gap between research and policy? Do you enjoy working in an interdisciplinary environment that provides actionable insights for Government and business to achieve rapid reductions in emissions? Do you have experience of working with stakeholders to deliver complex research programmes? As the Impact and Engagement Manager for the Production and Consumption Transformations (PACT) Centre you will drive impactful projects, build strong relationships with our network of government, private, and third sector partners, and contribute to the delivery of this ambitious research programme.

This is your unique opportunity to join the Production and Consumption Transformations (PACT) Centre that is jointly funded by UKRI and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ). The PACT Centre provides the underpinning evidence and actionable insights on how to realise a deliverable and socially just transformation of production and consumption systems in line with climate targets. PACT brings the system thinking to net zero. This task presents a complex systems problem that requires a detailed investigation into the intersecting economic, social and political realities.

The PACT Centre brings together three leading UK Universities. The University of Leeds has supported the UK Government for many years providing both the UK’s Consumption based GHG accounts and scenario analysis on the role of resource efficiency in climate mitigation. This has provided insights into the scale of the opportunity but explaining how these changes could be realised within larger system change is the next step. Feeding into an understanding of system transformation, the University of Sussex brings extensive knowledge of the political and institutional dimensions of decision making and cultures, identifying where contestation exists along all the points of intervention from production to consumption and how these might be resolved. In addition, having worked extensively with both DESNZ and the Climate Change Committee, Lancaster University use deliberative methodologies to understand how policies and approaches impact people’s life experiences and fairness perceptions, and to involve people in decision making. Our ambition for this interdisciplinary team is to advance knowledge and provide practical strategies to accelerate the shift away from a linear model of production and consumption to meet our climate ambitions.

As the Impact and Engagement Manager for PACT you will work closely with our research team and partners to realise this ambitious project. You will drive the impact strategy of the centre and be responsible for delivering an ambitious programme of engagement with a range of stakeholders. This will require delivering for a variety of audiences including our funders in Government departments, businesses, and non-governmental organisations. You will take responsibility for promoting the work of the centre, managing our online presence, and acting as an ambassador for the centre at a range of workshops and events.

Please note that this post may be suitable for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker visa route but first-time applicants might need to qualify for salary concessions.
Leeds Institute of Cardiovascular & Metabolic Medicine

Faculty of Medicine and Health

This new and exciting position is funded by the BBSRC and will enable us to study one of the cortex lytic enzymes, SleB. Bacterial spores are among the most pernicious cells in nature. Formed as survival structures in response to nutrient starvation, their ubiquity and extreme resistance to heat and other stress factors that would ordinarily kill vegetative cells means they are difficult to eradicate. This presents problems in the food sector, for example, since spores can survive processing and then germinate and proliferate, resulting in spoilage or toxigenesis. SleB is somehow held in an inactive state during spore dormancy and can withstand whatever insults are thrown at the spore during that period, before rapidly assuming activity during spore germination. Building a detailed molecular and dynamic understanding of SleB activity in dormant and germinating spores, which will complement the available structural and functional data, will present new routes to improved control of spores.

You will use modelling and simulation tools to perform molecular dynamics simulations of SleB and of some of its partner proteins in complex model membranes. These simulations will enable us to answer key questions about SleB function. You will work in the group of Dr Antreas Kalli at the Leeds Institute of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine (LICAMM), and the work will involve close and interactive collaboration with the group of Dr Graham Cristie at the University of Cambridge who will evaluate the models derived from the computational work.

If you are looking for a role that will provide new knowledge on a very important membrane protein, apply today.

As Research Fellow your main duties will include:

Working with and in support of this research grant to ensure the project is successfully completed;

Performing and analysing the molecular modelling and molecular dynamics simulations of the SleB and some of its partner proteins to meet the main aims of the study;

Generating and pursuing original research ideas in the appropriate subject area;

Developing research objectives and proposals and contributing to setting the direction of the research project and team including, where appropriate preparing proposals for funding in collaboration with colleagues;

Evaluating methods and techniques used and results obtained by other researchers and to relate such evaluations appropriately to your own work;

Communicating or presenting research results through publication or other recognised forms of output;

Preparing papers for publication in leading international journals and independently writing reports;

Collaborating effectively with our experimental collaborators at the University of Cambridge and with other research groups within Leeds and elsewhere to ensure the production of robust and high quality research;

Working both independently and also as part of a larger team of researchers, engaging in knowledge-transfer activities where appropriate and feasible;

Maintaining your own continuing professional development and acting as a mentor to less experienced colleagues as appropriate;

Contributing to the research culture of the School, where appropriate;

Contributing to the training of both undergraduate and postgraduate students, where appropriate, including assisting with the supervision of projects in areas relevant to the project.

To explore the post further or for any queries you may have, please contact:

Dr Antreas Kalli, Associate Professor

Email: a.kalli@leeds.ac.uk
