Research Fellow in Integrative Structural Molecular Biology/Biochemistry, Faculty of Biological Sciences

Salary: Grade 7 (£41,064 - £48,822 p.a.)

Available on a fixed-term basis for a maximum of 13 months (1 July 2026 - 31 July 2027) (to complete specific time limited work)

This role will be based on the university campus. We are open to discussing flexible working arrangements.

Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge? Do you have an established background in protein structure/function analysis by integration of biochemical, biophysical and structural methods? Do you want to further your career in one of the UKs leading research intensive Universities?

Antibiotic resistance is projected to cause 10 million deaths per year by 2050, with gram-negative (diderm) pathogens comprising 9 of the 12 bacteria that pose the greatest threat to human health. The outer membrane (OM) of these pathogens acts as a first line of defence against an antibiotic assault and, therefore, finding ways to perturb OM assembly may deliver new routes to kill gram-negative bacteria, or sensitise them to existing antibiotics. We have been studying the mechanism by which outer membrane proteins (OMPs) reach the OM, how chaperones facilitate OMP delivery, and how the β-barrel assembly machinery (BAM) folds/inserts its clients into the OM (e.g. Schiffrin et al, Commun Biol, 2022; Csoma et al, 2025; Fenn et al, 2024; Calabrese et al, Nat Commun, 2020).

In this project we aim to gain new information about a key player in OMP assembly, the periplasmic chaperone SurA. We have previously identified two hotspot regions on SurA that are critical for OMP recognition and now seek to address the following important questions:

What are the sequence determinants for OMP recognition and how is communication between binding sites achieved? [using NMR, ITC, native MS, peptide arrays]

How does SurA modulate the conformational ensemble of its OMP clients and remodel them to ensure they remain folding-competent? [using smFRET, HX-MS, NMR and other methods]

How do mutations in key hotspots alter the range of OMPs found in the OM [using proteomics] and are different hotspots on SurA responsible for binding and delivering different OMPs to BAM [using crosslinking-MS]?

Given that deletion of SurA results in OM defects, reduced pathogenicity, and loss of OM integrity, SurA could be a good target for the development of new antimicrobials.

You will be responsible for the acquisition, analysis and integration of data obtained from a range of experimental (including smFRET, proteomics, NMR) and computational (e.g., AlphaFold) techniques, enabling the characterisation of complex and challenging systems involved in OMP chaperoning by SurA and delivery to BAM.

You will be based in the laboratories of Dr Antonio Calabrese, Professor Sheena Radford and Dr Anastasia Zhurvaleva, and work closely with collaborators at Leeds. You should have a PhD (or be close to completion) in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biophysics or a related discipline. You will have an interest in analytical techniques, and whilst significant experience in structural biology and/or biophysics is essential, training in any areas that you lack experience will be provided.

To explore the post further or for any queries you may have, please contact:

Dr Antonio Calabrese, Associate Professor

Email: a.calabrese@leeds.ac.uk

Prof Sheena Radford, Astbury Professor of Biophysics

Email: s.e.radford@leeds.ac.uk

Dr Anastasia Zhurvaleva, Lecturer in Biological NMR Spectroscopy

Email: a.zhuravleva@leeds.ac.uk

Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge? Do you have an established background in atmospheric or climate science with an interest in physical climate change and the Earth’s energy budget?

The Earth’s Energy Imbalance (EEI) is a fundamental measure of ongoing anthropogenic climate change. Since the early 2000s, satellite observations have revealed a robust increase in the Earth’s heating rate, with an EEI trend of around 0.5 W m⁻² per decade. While some increase is expected from anthropogenic forcing such as increases in greenhouses gases, and the climate system’s response to it, the magnitude and variability of this trend remains difficult to understand and for climate models to reproduce. In this role you will participate in a new international climate model intercomparison project, CERESMIP, by performing targeted climate model simulations in order to compare simulated and satellited observed (CERES) energy fluxes and assess our understanding of the radiative forcing and climate feedback processes driving the observed EEI increase. You will run climate model experiments with HadGEM3-GC5c, compare forcing and feedback outputs against observed trends, and work closely with the Met Office Hadley Centre and other international colleagues / modelling centres. You will contribute to peer-reviewed publications documenting the results in time for consideration for IPCC AR7.

You will have, or be close to obtaining, a PhD in the field of Atmospheric or Climate Science, or a related discipline, and have experience of running global climate models on high performance computing platforms and analysing their output

Please note: If you are not a British or Irish citizen, from 1 January 2021 you will require permission to work in the UK. This will normally be in the form of a visa but, if you are an EEA/Swiss citizen and resident in the UK before 31 December 2020, this may be your passport or status under the EU Settlement Scheme.

Please note that this post may be suitable for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker visa route but first-time applicants might need to qualify for salary concessions.
Do you have a strong interest in Developing Processes? Do you have experience in Sustainability and Bio-Solvents? Are you keen to develop your career in Green Chemistry?

Achieving an economic, sustainable and net zero ambition for biogenically derived chemicals is a massive industry-wide challenge. Most solvents are petrochemically derived, and present one of the main wastes in pharma and fine chemical manufacture. The use of bio-derived feedstocks is attractive for making replacement bio-solvents for reasons of low-carbon footprint, however their source and production methods often entrain water and new impurities that are problematic for use in pharma. Current work has shown a bio-source can be used to generate crude bio-acetone and bio-acetonitrile but both require purification before being suitable replacement solvents. The former is used widely for plant cleaning whilst the latter is used in substantial quantity for making oligonucleotide medicines. Post-application recycle and re-use of both solvents will also be investigated.

In this project, you will develop sustainable and cost-effective methods for purifying the bio-solvents, testing low energy membrane drying technologies, assessing the purity of the solvents, investigating how used acetone or acetonitrile can be recycled and optimising protocols to help improve our understanding of the best design, economics and sustainable deployment. This will involve lab-based testing of pervaporation membranes in continuous flow and further purification of the solvent, integrating novel manufacturing methods into an intensified process flowsheet and collaborating on the development of life cycle sustainability assessments through multiple decision criteria.

This project is funded in part by Innovate UK under the Sustainable Medicines Manufacturing – Grand Challenge: Industrialising UK Bio-based Solvents for Global Medicine Manufacturing. The University of Leeds are a partner in this project in collaboration with 10 other organisations.

We are open to discussing flexible working arrangements.

What we offer in return

26 days holiday plus approx.16 Bank Holidays/days that the University is closed by custom (including Christmas) – That’s 42 days a year!

Generous pension scheme plus life assurance– the University contributes 14.5% of salary

Health and Wellbeing: Discounted staff membership options at The Edge, our state-of-the-art Campus gym, with a pool, sauna, climbing wall, cycle circuit, and sports halls.

Personal Development: Access to courses run by our Organisational Development & Professional Learning team.

Access to on-site childcare, shopping discounts and travel schemes are also available.

And much more!

To explore the post further or for any queries you may have, please contact:

Professor John Blacker, Professor

Tel: +44 (0)113 343 8239

Email: J.Blacker@leeds.ac.uk

Please note that this post may be suitable for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker visa route but first-time applicants might need to qualify for salary concessions.
Are you an experienced and ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge? Do you want to further your career in one of the UK’s leading research-intensive Universities? Are you looking to apply your skills in synthesis and characterisation of metal-organic frameworks to the development of new stimuli-responsive materials?

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have gained substantial attention from both academic and industrial sectors because of their exceptional porosity and their tailorable structures and properties. Use of MOFs in areas such as catalysis (e.g. CO2 valorisation) and healthcare (including biomarker sensing and drug delivery) offer great promise for tackling major global challenges in energy, pollution reduction, and the diagnosis and treatment of diseases.

This project, funded through a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship, will:

build on our development of microwave flow reactor platforms for the discovery, optimisation, and scale-up of MOFs specifically targeting stimuli-responsive materials with new structures and particle characteristics;

deliver new understanding of MOF self-assembly processes and structure-property relationships using a range of in-, on- and off-line characterisation techniques including X-ray and electron diffraction, electron microscopy, IR and UV-vis spectroscopies, and gas sorption.

By combining MOF synthesis platforms (including one integrated with inline analysis to probe self‑assembly mechanisms) with comprehensive structural characterisation, this project will fast-track the development of high-performance MOFs and overcome challenges in reproducibility, unlocking their commercial exploitation.

We are seeking a Research Fellow to lead the synthesis and characterisation of new stimuli‑responsive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), using both flow and microwave reactor platforms and complementary experimental approaches. A major part of this role will be the design and execution of synthetic strategies to produce novel MOFs, followed by detailed characterisation to understand their structures, properties, and functional behaviour.

In parallel, you will investigate MOF nucleation and crystallisation mechanisms, measuring in situ formation and growth rates under both conventional and microwave heating. You will develop and apply kinetic models and compare reaction pathways across different heating regimes to build a comprehensive understanding of how structure and function emerge during synthesis.

You will employ advanced characterisation techniques, including, where appropriate, X‑ray atomic pair distribution function (PDF) analysis, total/diffuse scattering, and electron diffraction (ED), alongside more routine X‑ray diffraction.

You will work closely with a Research Fellow developing automated flow microwave platforms, as well as with PhD researchers. Together, you will integrate experimental data and mechanistic understanding into evolutionary algorithms and optimisation workflows to accelerate the discovery of high‑performance MOFs. You will also collaborate with colleagues across the Institute for Process Research and Development (iPRD) and the School of Chemistry at the University of Leeds to establish these capabilities towards MOF production.

The role includes dedicated time at major facilities such as the Flow-Xl facility (Leeds), Diamond Light Source, and the National Electron Diffraction Facility (Warwick). As this role is funded by Dr Andrea Laybourn’s UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship, you will be provided with opportunities for travel to partner universities and there is financial support to attend national and international conferences and training courses.

You will have a PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science, Physics, or a related discipline, with experience in the synthesis of MOFs and their characterisation using X‑ray diffraction techniques. You will bring a demonstrable track record of designing and executing synthetic strategies, analysing crystallographic data and developing insight into materials behaviour/properties.

Experience in either powder or single‑crystal X-ray diffraction is essential for this role. Experience with in situ characterisation, mechanistic studies, or advanced diffraction‑based methods such as electron diffraction, pair distribution function (PDF) analysis or total/diffuse scattering would be highly advantageous, but these are not prerequisites. Experience with flow chemistry or microwave technologies would also be beneficial, though are optional. As part of the role, you will have the opportunity to train on new techniques. This post would be ideal for an ambitious, curious, and innovative researcher who enjoys working in a diverse and interdisciplinary team, is excited to learn new skills, and is keen to develop new experimental capabilities. You should be motivated to share knowledge openly and support and train others within the group.

We are open to discussing flexible working arrangements.

To explore the post further or for any queries you may have, please contact:

Dr Andrea Laybourn, UKRI Future Leaders Fellow and Associate Professor

Email: A.Laybourn@leeds.ac.uk

Please note that this post may be suitable for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker visa route but first-time applicants might need to qualify for salary concessions.
