We are inviting applications for a Clinical Doctoral Fellowship within the Academic Unit for Ageing and Stroke Research (ASR), located at Leeds Institute of Health Sciences and Bradford Institute for Health Research. Funded as part of a prestigious NIHR Advanced Fellowship award, this exciting opportunity is ideal for a medical, nursing, or allied health professional, passionate about improving care for older adults through innovative research. 

The Clinical Doctoral Fellowship will focus on co-development and evaluation of an integrated physical health service for older people with complex mental health problems, spanning inpatient and community settings. Plans are directly aligned with national policy priorities as set out in the NHS 10-Year Plan, including the forthcoming Frailty and Dementia Modern Service Framework (MSF) and Mental Health MSF. The exact content of the Fellowship and a bespoke doctoral training plan will be developed with the successful candidate, drawing on collective expertise and through appropriate training courses to meet the needs of the individual clinical doctoral fellow. We are seeking a highly motivated and committed individual to further develop their skills in teaching and research in oral surgery and clinical and academic leadership. As a Clinical Lecturer or Clinical Associate Professor you will make a significant contribution to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes, leading on specific aspects and providing hands on clinical supervision for students and clinical trainees. You will also contribute to clinical quality improvement and staff development.

You will have a commitment to teaching and scholarship that is forward looking and reflects the needs of current students. You will be able and willing to contribute to research within the department in alignment with the research priorities of the School and the wider University. You will have a commitment to your own development as well as the development of others within a team approach to deliver an exceptional student experience.

You will also work as an Honorary Consultant in Oral Surgery with Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust as part of a consultant team contributing to the clinical oral surgery and acute dental care services with an emphasis on clinical teaching and high-quality patient outcomes and experience. You will be responsible for meeting the requirements of the Trust in terms of clinical governance and fulfilling the agreed job plan (see Appendix). 

Effective interpersonal and time management skills are essential as is the capacity to motivate and enthuse others and to work successfully as a team member. Effective communication and administrative skills are also essential. As an academic member of staff, you will be required to deliver other duties that are commensurate with the grade and role.

Are you an enthusiastic and motivated clinician with a desire to be part of a successful research team? Are you ambitious with an interest in clinical research? Do you want to further your career in one of the UK’s leading research intensive universities? 

The successful candidate will join the Scleroderma (also known as Systemic sclerosis; SSc) research team, under the leadership of Professor Francesco Del Galdo. With a focus on scleroderma research, you will lead on translational research studies as well as taking the role of sub investigator in clinical trials.

Research projects will aim to better understand disease progression in patients diagnosed with scleroderma, from very early disease to individuals with active SSc. You will primarily focus on supporting the interventional clinical trial portfolio in addition to having an active role in the actively recruiting observational study (Strike). There may also be a focus on imaging based projects (both magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasound) to identify the disease segments that are the focus of specific research projects.

You will be medically qualified and have completed core medical training or equivalent, with clinical experience in rheumatology. You will have current GMC registration with MRCP (or equivalent). You will have basic and clinical background in Immunology and autoimmune diseases.

We have implemented a new approach to pay for junior doctors and dentists in training which mirrors the new pay system and transitional arrangements introduced into the NHS by the 2016 contract for Junior Doctor / Dentists in training; the salary awarded for this role will be awarded depending on a trainee’s current NHS pay scale status under the transitional arrangements.

Professional Registration

As a qualified doctor you should hold registration with the GMC with a license to practise. The successful candidate will join the Scleroderma (also known as Systemic sclerosis; SSc) research team, at the University of Leeds, hosted within the Leeds Institute of Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Medicine, under the leadership of Professor Francesco Del Galdo. The Fellow will support the European Scleroderma Trials and Research group (EUSTAR), a world-leading international systemic sclerosis research network and registry, as Medical Lead for the network projects. 

You will provide medically qualified input into the clinical and scientific delivery of EUSTAR research activity. This will include supporting registry-based studies, observational cohort research, clinical interpretation of data, project development, data quality, analysis planning and preparation of reports, presentations, and publications. You will work closely with Professor Del Galdo, the EUSTAR leadership team, the EUSTAR Programme Manager (Thomas Osborne), and international collaborators, statisticians, and data managers in the EUSTAR team. You will ensure that EUSTAR research activity remains clinically relevant, scientifically robust and aligned with the needs of people living with systemic sclerosis.

Research projects will aim to better understand disease progression, clinical phenotypes, organ involvement, treatment patterns and outcomes in patients diagnosed with scleroderma, from very early disease to individuals with active established SSc. You will primarily focus on EUSTAR-related research activity and the delivery of outputs from registry and cohort data, with opportunities to contribute to collaborative international projects using the EUSTAR database. You will have the opportunity to maintain your clinical skills and training needs by participating to the Leeds-based systemic sclerosis clinical activity including the opportunity to participate to translational research.
