Ranked 29th in the world (QS 2026), the School of English at the University of Leeds operates at the leading edge of recent developments in literary studies and creative practice. Located within the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures, the School has a long history of nurturing poets and authors, publishing new work and collaborating with external partners, including the National Poetry Centre. Our BA in English Literature and Creative Writing is currently ranked 2nd in the UK (Complete University Guide, 2026). The School of English is looking to appoint an outstanding teacher and creative practitioner as a Lecturer in Creative Writing.
As a lecturer, you will join the Creative Writing team in the School of English and will contribute to the team’s existing strengths in teaching, research, creative practice and engagement activities. You will have completed a PhD in a relevant discipline, or will have equivalent professional experience. You will also have experience of teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate, university levels. You will be an active writer, developing your profile as a recognised literary voice in your area of creative practice, and you will have produced high-quality research outputs and/or creative publications.
You will design and deliver lectures and seminars on existing core modules, such as ‘Writing Creatively’ (Level 1) and ‘Developing Creative Writing’ (Level 2). You will also have opportunities to devise and teach option modules relating to your areas of research expertise and to supervise undergraduate final-year projects. You will be expected to teach and supervise Masters students, and to attract and supervise PhD students. You will take an active role in the citizenship of the School, and will be encouraged to engage in outreach activities and collaborations.
