COMET Research Fellow in Ductile Tectonic Deformation with Satellite Geodesy

 Salary: Grade 7 (£39,105 – £46,485 p.a. depending on experience)

This role will be based on the university campus, with scope for it to be undertaken in a hybrid manner. We are also open to discussing flexible working arrangements.

The Centre for Observation and Modelling of Earthquakes, Volcanoes and Tectonics (COMET) is seeking to recruit a creative research fellow in Ductile Tectonic Deformation to join our active and ambitious research team.

COMET is a world-leading research centre based across the School of Earth and Environment at the University of Leeds, 13 additional UK universities, and the British Geological Survey (BGS). We use a combination of state-of-the-art Earth observation techniques (e.g. InSAR, seismology, GNSS, field observations), and cutting-edge numerical models to study earthquakes and volcanoes, and better understand these geophysical processes and the hazards they pose.

In this role, you will be responsible for conducting research on the rheology of the ductile crust and upper mantle, which spans large-scale, long-term dynamic modelling of the evolution of mountain belts and short-term observations of transient geodetic motions. You will also incorporate constraints from observations of exhumed rocks that have undergone ductile deformation in the past.

Although based in the School of Earth and Environment, you will be expected to work with scientists across our partner institutions, and will have the opportunity for research visits to those institutions.

With a PhD in Earth Sciences or a related discipline, you will have excellent communication skills, the ability to work as part of a team, and experience in observing and/or modelling tectonic deformation.

Please note that this post may be suitable for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker visa route but first-time applicants might need to qualify for salary concessions. For more information please visit: www.gov.uk/skilled-worker-visa.

For research and academic posts, we will consider eligibility under the Global Talent visa. For more information please visit: https://www.gov.uk/global-talent

What we offer in return

Generous pension scheme plus life assurance – the University contributes 14.5% of salary

Health and Wellbeing: Discounted staff membership options at The Edge, our state-of-the-art Campus gym, with a pool, sauna, climbing wall, cycle circuit, and sports halls.

Personal Development: Access to courses run by our Organisational Development & Professional Learning team.

Access to on-site childcare, shopping discounts and travel schemes are also available.
