NIHR Complex Interventions Division Intern

This is open to all current undergraduates not in their final year

The internship will be hosted in the Leeds Institute of Clinical Trials Research (LICTR) and specifically within the Complex Interventions Division (CID).

The Leeds Institute of Clinical Trials Research (LICTR) is an international leader in the field of clinical trials. The Unit is one of the largest in the UK and conducts national and international randomised and early phase clinical trials in a variety of clinical fields. Our main aim is to support the challenge of changing clinical practice for the better and our past results and current work have already helped to do this. Our results inform the academic development of this specialised field of clinical research on a national and international level. Particularly, we specialise in complex phase III trials, efficient phase I/II trials, biomarker driven designs, seamless phase II/III designs, adaptive designs and the development and evaluation of complex interventions.

The Complex Intervention Division of LICTR specialises in the evaluation of complex health and social care interventions. Complex interventions comprise multiple interacting components, underpinned by theory-driven processes, such as rehabilitation, self-management, psychological, behavioural, supportive or lifestyle interventions, as well as complex drug regimens. Our work involves the design, conduct, analysis and dissemination of both definitive, large-scale, national, randomised controlled trials and earlier-phase research, including pilots, feasibility studies and intervention development; epidemiological studies and evidence synthesis; together with methodological research investigating real-world challenges of complex intervention evaluations. Our work spans a wide range of clinical specialities and settings, including stroke, older people, mental health, diet & obesity, cancer & palliative care, secondary, primary & community care and across transitions of care.

As an NIHR Complex Intervention Division Spring / Summer intern, you will join an experienced Clinical Trial and Data Management team to support the Division’s work on the development and delivery of complex intervention evaluations. You will work on a research project designed to explore key issues in clinical trial design and conduct.

The internship project will explore approaches to safety reporting in complex intervention evaluations conducted within CID to identify current practice and appraise this against recently published guidelines. The findings will inform future trial design and conduct, and assist in the application of new recommendations for practice in this area.

Although the project to be completed by the intern is focussed primarily on clinical trial conduct, it is aligned to clinical areas related to nursing, psychology and allied health professions and we would also welcome applications from interns studying these related subjects.

The internship is a funded 6-8 week placement within LICTR with dates of completion to be negotiated with the successful candidate, but expected to take place over the Spring and/or Summer break in 2026.

This role is not eligible for Skilled Worker visa sponsorship. Information on other visa options is available at: https://www.gov.uk/browse/visas-immigration/work-visas

Prior to the closing date, Wednesday 4 February 10-11am, an online question-and-answer (Q&A) session will be offered for prospective applicants to discuss the internship and answer any questions. Prospective applicants will be informed about the potential for accommodation, travel expenses, and equipment to be provided. Applicants should register for this in advance.
