Academic Writing Mentor

Paid Job Opportunity! Student Writing Mentors APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN

The Learning Development Team is looking for enthusiastic students to become Academic Writing Mentors in the Library’s Writing Space during the next academic year. The Writing Space provides students with a space to develop their academic writing skills through peer support from specially trained Academic Writing Mentors.

You do not need to be an expert academic writer to apply; all we ask is that you:

  • Are an undergraduate or taught postgraduate student at the University of Leeds during 2024/25.
  • Have completed at least one academic year if you are an undergraduate student.
  • Are passionate about supporting your peers.

Full training will be provided to all Mentors and you will be continuously supported by members of the Learning Development Team and encouraged to develop your own skills.  Previous mentors have reported increased confidence in their own writing, a greater sense of achievement and belonging during their studies, and increased employability skills.

The Writing Space will run every weekday from 1-4pm. Academic Writing Mentors will work a number of three-hour shifts across the semester, attend mandatory training sessions in September, and will have opportunities to support the Learning Development Team’s student-facing activity including creating learning resources, writing blog posts, and shadowing members of the Learning Development Team.

This role will be appointed at grade 3, spine point 6 of the University of Leeds grading structure. The hourly rate will be £12.21.

Key Dates:

  • Deadline to Apply: Monday 6 May, midnight.
  • An assessment Centre will be held in Leeds on Thursday 16th or Friday 17th May for shortlisted applicants. The assessment centre will be a half-day (am or pm) session and you must be available to attend.
